Getaway Destinations > Central Coast California > Ojai

Ojai, whose name is derived from a Chumash Indian word meaning "moon", has a rich and colorful past. Today's Ojai is home to world-class art galleries; interesting shops, studios and boutiques; fine restaurants; and a variety of events in every season.

The outdoors is always beckoning, for Ojai is the starting point for miles of trails, attractive campgrounds and parks, and points of interest throughout the Ojai Valley.

Destination: Ojai Valley
Thirty minutes north of Ventura on Highway 33 is the Ojai Valley. Originally inhabited by the Oak Grove People in pre-historic times, Ojai was later populated by the Chumash Indians that ranged over an area from Malibu to Morro Bay. This small, bucolic valley is roughly seven miles long and four miles wide, and renowned for its spiritual qualities. You an experience these spiritual qualities by visiting the Meditation Mount or the Krishnamurti Library in the east end of the valley, the Ojai Foundation in Upper Ojai, and by riding the Ojai Trolley around town.

Weather in the Ojai is generally mild with daytime highs averaging in the high 70's (winter highs of 66; summer highs of 90), and nighttime lows averaging in the mid 40's (winter lows at 37; summer lows of 55). This comfortable climate makes the valley ideal for any number of crops from citrus to grapes and vegetables. It also means that outdoor activities from swimming and hiking to biking and horseback riding can be enjoyed year round.

This is by no means a complete listing of the wonderful surprises awaiting you within the Ojai Valley. Take a virtual trip through Ojai on our website at www.the-ojai.org, or just come for a visit and see for yourself.
