Getaway Destinations > Northern California > Monterey

Whether you visit Monterey County to enjoy a romantic stroll on the beach at sunset or to visit the “Splash Zone” interactive children’s exhibit at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey County is brimming with activities for all types of visitors. There are so many things to see and do the only problem one may encounter is the decision, “what to do first?”

Weddings, honeymoons, candlelit dinners and picnics by the ocean are some reasons couples choose Monterey County as an “escape from reality.” Couples will find unlimited places to stay, including quaint Victorian bed and breakfast inns, large resort hotels and small cottages tucked away in the trees. Many of these offer romantic packages. Restaurants, some of the most delightful in the world, offer views of the sunset over the Pacific Ocean while dining.

Activities may include strolls along the beach, shopping in quaint Carmel, biking, hiking, sea kayaking, touring the wine country and of course, the world class golfing. Numerous events, such as the Great Wine Escape weekend, offer couples a relaxing alternative. There are several establishments that specialize in arranging a wide variety of weddings. Couples come from around the world to say their vows alongside the ocean, at the famous Carmel Mission or in rustic Carmel Valley.

Family Fun
Families visiting Monterey County will never know a dull moment. Museums, recreational activities, historical tours, playgrounds (like Dennis the Menace Park created by cartoonist Hank Ketchum), hiking trails, events and family-oriented restaurants are all possibilities while staying in the area.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a must and adults as well as children will be entertained for hours exploring and learning about the exhibits.

Families can “rough it” at one of the many campgrounds located in Monterey County. Big Sur has a variety of them (in both state parks and private campgrounds), which are located near other area attractions.

Family-minded restaurants are abundant throughout the area. Children can meet Forrest Gump at Bubba Gump’s Restaurant on Cannery Row or enjoy a bowl of Clam Chowder on Old Fisherman’s Wharf. The “Path of History” is a great way to explore Monterey by foot, while learning about the rich history and culture associated with the city.

Monterey County is a destination for everyone. So many opportunities exist; it is impossible to experience them all in one visit. Whether you decide on a romantic or family excursion, whether weddings or whales are on your agenda, the endless possibilities will keep you entertained throughout your stay.
